The BMW 2002 was revolutionary, iconic, fun, sexy, cool, practical, kinda quick, very sporty and a hundred other positive modifiers, all deserving. This is the 50th anniversary of the little two-door four-seater RWD-with-a-trunk machine, and the BMW Car Club of America Foundation is putting together an exhibit at its museum to celebrate. The exhibit will open May 18 in Greer, South Carolina, and will run all the way through January 2019. But you will want to be there for the big opening bash May 18.
Why do we love the 2002? We know and you probably know too, and experts agree.
“You feel it in your bones,” read the invite from the CCA Foundation. “The 2002 is more than just a car. For many, it’s an obsession.”
“It’s just a blast to drive,” said Jackie Jouret, former editor of the now-gone Bimmer magazine and author of the book that will accompany the BMW CCA Foundation’s exhibit. “It’s light, handles really well, has good brakes and has just enough power to be quick, if not outright fast. It’s totally analog. It doesn’t have power steering. You have to work for your speed in a 2002, and it’s really satisfying to take a corner well in one of these cars.”
